Solar Installation Backlogs Reach 12–16 Weeks in High-Demand Markets
Residential solar installation backlogs have stretched to 12–16 weeks in California, Texas, Florida, and the mid-Atlantic. If you're planning solar in 2025, getting into the queue now is critical to installing before year-end.
Homeowners planning to claim the 30% IRA solar tax credit for tax year 2025 should be aware that installation timelines in many markets have extended to 3–4 months, making immediate action necessary if you want to complete installation before December 31.
Market-by-Market Backlog Status
California: Following NEM 3.0 implementation, demand shifted significantly toward solar+storage systems, which are more complex to install. Backlogs in Southern California and the Bay Area are running 14–18 weeks for full solar+battery installations.
Texas: Post-Winter Storm Uri awareness of grid fragility has driven strong interest in resilience-oriented solar+storage. DFW, Austin, and Houston markets are reporting 10–14 week backlogs for quality installers.
Florida: Florida's strong solar economics and large retiree population continue driving demand. Tampa, Orlando, and South Florida backlogs are running 8–12 weeks.
Mid-Atlantic (VA, MD, NJ, PA): NYSERDA and state solar incentive programs have driven strong demand. Backlogs of 10–14 weeks are common for quality installers in these markets.
Less congested markets: Midwest and mountain states generally have shorter wait times of 4–8 weeks for most systems.
Why Are Backlogs This Long?
Interconnection queues: Utility interconnection (the approval process to connect your system to the grid) has become a bottleneck as utilities handle record application volumes. In California, interconnection approvals that used to take 2–4 weeks now take 6–10 weeks in some utility territories.
Permit volumes: Building departments in high-growth solar markets are processing record permit applications, adding 2–4 weeks to timelines compared to 2021–2022.
Installer capacity: The solar labor market remains tight. Quality installation crews are fully booked, and the best installers aren't taking shortcuts on hiring to expand capacity quickly.
What to Do Right Now If You're Planning Solar
Get 3+ quotes immediately. The quote process takes 1–2 weeks (site visit + proposal review). Starting now means you can make a decision in July and potentially be installed before the holidays.
Ask specifically about installation timeline when comparing quotes. An installer who can start in August vs. October is a significant differentiator if you want to claim the 2025 tax credit.
What you need to claim the 2025 tax credit: Your system must be installed and operational (permit closed, utility interconnection approved) by December 31, 2025. A deposit or signed contract alone does not qualify.
The credit continues through 2032 — if you can't complete installation in 2025, you'll still receive the same 30% credit when you do install. The urgency is specific to capturing the credit in a particular tax year, not about the credit disappearing.
